Community Connections
At COWN we pride ourselves in being part of the community, both locally and globally. As part of that belief, we have participated in a number of charities and fundraising activities. Below are a few of the charities that we have supported over the years.
BC Guide Dogs for the Blind http://www.bcguidedog.com/
CMS Food Bank: 2740 Lashburn, Cobble Hill, BC
Pacific Assistance Dog Society http://www.pads.ca/
Lion's Hearing Ear Dog Foundation http://www.dogguides.com
Cowichan Cat Rescue
We have also taken on a number of fundraising activities. Our latest goal was as follows:
KEVLAR VEST FOR TITO
In 2012, Cowichan Dog Obedience Training Club and the Tyee Kennel Club joined forces to raise enough money to buy a Kevlar Protective Vest for a West Shore K9 Unit made up of Constable Dion Sutton and his four legged partner "Tito". Our two clubs had fund raised together in the past to buy equipment for a K9 team from the Duncan RCMP.
Constable Sutton and "Tito" live in our area and were featured on a TV series shown on Animal Planet called "K9 Mounties" which followed 6 RCMP Officers from across Canada through their initial training with their new K9 partners. The video is available to borrow from our library.
The total cost for the specially made vest was $2300.40! It was made by a company called K9 Storm Incorporated, based in Winnipeg Manitoba. The company itself is very interesting, they provide most of the Kevlar vests used all over the world by K9 units, even the elite Navy Seals teams.
We started fund raising at the Tyee Dog Show in May 2012 and with some help from a few generous private donators and a super donation of over $500.00 from the students of George Bonner Middle School from their "Trot for Tito" run. Before we knew it, we had a large part of the required money and both dogs clubs topped it up to the final amount needed.
Constable Sutton sent off the specialized sizing kit and now Tito has his vest! K9 Storm offered, at no additional charge, to put an embroidered label inside the vest with all of the names of the substantial donators so that for ever more, people will know who purchased the vest for Tito.
I know that Constable Sutton was blown away by the generosity and community support shown to him during the fundraising for Tito's vest. When Tito is retired, the vest will be passed on to his successor and will be used for a long time protecting these great dogs! It is our way of saying thank you for the jobs they do protecting their human partners and our community.
This was also a great opportunity for us, and especially the school children, to get to meet a Police Officer and his dog in such a positive way. Constable Sutton is a very positive person to speak to.
Thank you so much to everyone who donated and helped with this worthy cause.
